Passive Income done Right

Everybody these days is trying to create passive income by doing nothing and being a leach. Here is how I created $125/mo of WIN-WIN recurring passive income for about 2hrs and $200 in parts.

What I did to EARN this passive income is to offset regular spend by increasing efficiency. We have a pump that runs 24hrs a day filling 42,000 Gallon Fire Suppression Tanks. That is similar to having a heater running on LOW or Medium all day, every day.

We have 1/2hp pumps, 3/4hp, 2hp, 10hp… this one IIRC is rated at 1/2hp. It draws 5.45A while running into the intended load. We can calculate the regular and steady consumption using Ohms Law

V = I * R

V = Volts
I = Amps
R = Ohms

V in this case is 120V AC RMS
I is displayed as 5.45A

To use that, we need one more set of formulas for deriving Power in Watts

W = V * I

W = Watts
V = 120V
I = 5.45A

You just have to watch your units. If I*V=W then plug in the numbers.

Ok, about 650W
You can confirm that in about 18 ways

Now we are going to introduce 1 more metric

Watt Hours
It is exactly what it sounds like. The wattage you draw steady multiplied by the number of hours

648W Continuous
24hrs a day

Now we represent those numbers with their Units… Watts and hours

650W
15,600Wh = 15.6kwh

Ok, so we are burning 15.6kwh a day. Not bad until you work out a month of service

I dont know if you know how to count or not… But that above is HALF A MILLION.

0.5MWH a month
Half a Megawatt Hour a month
YES … IT ADDS UP FAST

If you are being charged $0.25/kwh (about half what I pay) that works out to

468kwh x $0.25/kwh = $117/mo

Yes, I omitted some units above (like month) but if you do your algebra you will find that my calculations come out correct. You just have to MIND YOUR UNITS. I have done 100,000 hours of “math” so I feel pretty confident about manipulating units in an equasion.

So what does all that mean to you?

Of course you need Solar Panels to make all this happen. Remember how we bought pallets of shattered panels and people were scoffing? Well, years later, they are producing output. They have been thru Snow, Horrific rain storms, wind storms, dust….

The panels just keep POUNDING out the work. Work is related to Power. Look above to see that we are doing 2,345W of work (2.45KW where 1hp is about 1kw). We have accumulated 3.2kWh so far.

That was with panels pointed in every which direction. Three pairs were laying on their side. Here is what I get after running a few screws into some 2×4 legs

Another 200W of continuous work. That is A TON of power, just pouring out of the sky. That alone would offset our Pumping bill by 20%

There are no tricks here man. I am not selling anything. I am just a Quality Engineer, Test Engineer, Principal Engineer, Director of Hardware and Manufacturing, …. telling you that FREE FUCKING ENERGY falls from the sky and you can capture it and store it for up to 10 years using Lithium Batteries.

Below I have that ~645W moved over to the OFF GRID SOLAR. The way you read that panel tells you the following

  • I have no power coming in on mains
  • I have 686W coming in from the sun
  • I have 645W going out to my pump

Yea thats right

To make that work I have about 9.6kwh of batteries. The math on that goes like this

9.6KWH / 0.645KW = hours

About 14hrs

Well… Guessing that we have 6hrs or so of pounding sun a day (we have more…) I can add 14hrs to 6hrs to get 20hrs. We can see right off that I will come up 4hrs short for 24/hr a day service.

Your solar pumps more juice than you are using… which MINE DOES (LOT MORE)

0.0A off of mains power

13.9% of 5KW = 695W
695W = 50W for Inverter + Autotransformer = our 645W of PUMP

4.6A coming in off the solar at something like 380V
That is something like 1,748W

9.5A heading out into a 52V nominal battery (FULL) so around 58V
58V * 9.5A = 551W of battery charge

551W battery charge + 645W Pump Work = 1,196W
Which… to ROUGH NUMBERS…. works out to out Solar Power coming in
(Slightly off due to a few assumptions like current solar working voltage, efficiency, etc)

Yea, so… to create this PASSIVE INCOME all I did was throw in a 20A double, run 3pcs 10AWG and a Ground… and done

  • 240V L1 and L2 in 10AWG come off the breaker and out to the Auto Transformer
  • Neutral comes back in 10AWG and gets tied to the Neutral main bar
  • After that… you can run split phase loads (120V)

This is a Test Box. Previously I had only 240V running to that NEMA 14-20. Now I have it wired properly for full 240/120 operation.

This article did not come out anything like planned. Oh well… maybe it will flip your switch, maybe it will baffle you. I dont care either way. We are all dying faster than we would like to admit… and… the best way to teach a man a lesson is thru setting an example.

THIS… is what I do with my time. I draw energy from the sun, run well pumps, and store the extra energy in batteries… to run the pump thru the night.

The Baby Birds Hatched!

While fishing out the 1/2″ conduit I came across 2 new baby birds! Just yesterday I saw mamma up there… But her feathers were looking ruffled. I know realize… I was seeing Mama next to babies.

Those are no more than a couple days old. Huge already (all feathers)

Anyhow, here is the pack-out I will use for installing the auto transformer today. Remember when we “sorted” all the AC bits into bins???

Task 1 of 8 (the 0420 Report)

“Install the Auto-Transformer so off-grid 420V-Array #003 can resume powering the well pump”

Previously the well pump was a 420′ head, 240V unit ($$$). That was replaced with a 120′ head 120V unit (order of Magnitude cheaper).

The SPF 5000 ES offers only 230/240V natively. It requires a 50lb spool of wire (effectively) to generate a 5KW capabile Neutral. From that neutral we can tap 120V 1ph, as is normally found in US.

Note that I am working from a Phone in Alaska (cough) so I hyperlinked the text only and not the pictures. It only takes a second on a PC but on an Android it is “too many clicks”.

Where I left the project it has been validated to perform using SOOW 10AWG cable. You really want 8awg in conduit for install into infrastructure, 10AWG rated for 90C or 105C will suffice, but significant heat is generated If you encroach on the 2,500W maximum load imbalance.

You can run it all day on 10AWG THWN on 20A Homeline breakers but IF you start loading it down you WILL generate significantly more heat and the cables WILL come into the heat sinking calculations.

So LESSON 1

  • Cables are heat sinks
  • Modern Chinese Engineering includes this in the power rating / derating
  • You need to actually load test to thermal soak on a 125F day to appreciate

O N W A R D

The dilemma is that the hardware is on site already and my “fixings” are here. My kit of AC is about a cubic yard, so what we call “a pallet”….

Lets start by getting the unit installed on the wall (over cement board) and then we can assess the required conduit size. 1/2″ or 3/4″ will work but unless we want to get out the hydraulic knockout…..
